Concerns over sex and LGBT contents on Netflix
Kuala Kangsar MP Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid (BN) raised her concerns over sex scenes and LGBT contents on Netflix. Not surprisingly, her remarks received backlash from netizens.
Netflix subscribers in Malaysia strongly disagreed with Datin Mastura, asking her “to stay away” and “don’t touch Netflix”.
Regarding the suggestion for censorship, some say that Netflix does provide limited streaming for kids.
Back in 2016 when Netflix was first launched in Malaysia, its support expert said that the contents would not be censored, however certain content may be unavailable due to regional licensing restrictions.
In addition, many Malaysians are defending Netflix by saying that the contents are much better than those on local television.
A poll was created on Twitter by Voices of Malaysia (VIM) on whether Netflix contents should or should not be censored, and it seems to be in favour of the latter.
As of today, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo has yet to give his answer regarding the issue.
