Distance to a government school in Malaysia

School holiday is coming to an end. This means it is time to go back to school.

However, not everyone has the same accessibility to school in Malaysia. As we can see from the statistic based on the average household and their distance to a government school, 9.7% household in Sabah and 14.2% household in Sarawak need to travel for more than 9km to reach the nearest government school. Meanwhile, in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, students can reach a government school in less than 5km.

The government should look into this issue as long-distance travel might affect students’ performance in school. Maybe more schools or roads need to be built to ease the accessibility.
