KLIA2 took over less than a quarter of the total cargo weight handled by KLIA

The opening of the second terminal in Kuala Lumpur International Airport dubbed as KLIA2 helped to reduce the total weight of cargo handled by its main terminal.

KLIA2 was officially opened in May 2014. But according to statistics, the second terminal only started to handle some of the cargoes from KLIA in 2016.

In 2015, KLIA handled 726,230 metric tonnes of cargo. The number was reduced to 523,345 metric tonnes in the following year (2016). It was a reduction of 202,885 metric tonnes.

However, the total weight of cargo handled by KLIA2 was only 119,212 metric tonnes. This means there was a reduction in the total weight of cargo handled by KLIA and KLIA2 in 2016.

Nevertheless, there was an increase in 2017. The combined total weight of cargo handled by KLIA and KLIA was 710,186 metric tonnes.

Despite the fluctuating weight, KLIA still handled a tremendous amount of cargo compared to the other airports in the country.

Meanwhile, Penang International Airport was the second busiest airport in Malaysia to handle cargo transportation. The total weight of cargo handled by Penang International Airport was consistent from 2015 to 2017, with an estimation of 130,000 metric tonnes each year.
