Malaysia Baharu and what’s next?

Today, Malaysia is on a wave of transformation. New government, Pakatan Harapan needs to be on the ball in delivering the much-needed change to the people. Now, the focus has shifted to assessing the performance of the newly-elected government.

People were chanting #MalaysiaBaharu, through social media as a form of support for the new government, and Instagram is no exception!

Spreading issue using #MalaysiaBaharu has been developing since May 14th 2018 and is seen to fluctuate. The hashtag became a trend, showing a progressive increase in usage from May 14th to May 18th, crossing the average border with 120 posts.

#BebasAnwar comes to an end, and the rakyat rejoiced when newly-elected Pakatan Harapan led by Tun Mahathir move to release de facto leader, Anwar Ibrahim on the 16th of May after receiving a royal pardon.

This, followed by the announcement of new cabinet, rakyat is in a state of euphoria and hopefulness, sharing photos and images (79%) of #MalaysiaBaharu on the social media platform.

Other hashtags such as #pru, #malaysia #malaysiamemilih and #pakatanharapan are used alongside to manifest their support for the government.

And what is #MalaysiaBaharu without Tun Mahathir. Many attributed this era of change to ‘tsunami Mahathir’. From the graph, Malaysia Indicator reveals #malaysiabaharu has an intense relation with Tun. Although Pakatan Harapan runs on 4 different parties, the graph above shows that whenever people talk of Malaysia Baharu, Tun Mahathir is the political figure whom is the centre of attention. Not Wan Azizah, not Mat Sabu, not Lim Guan Eng.

Some political commenter had voiced out that the 7th Prime Minister is even stronger than the 4th Prime Minister, from what gauged from the twitter sphere, it seems to be the cases. Tun Mahathir is PH and PH is tun Mahathir.

However, it’s still high in doubt that is Mahathir just an old king with new cloth and time will tell the truth. However, it is safe to say that the raise and fall of PH is highly depend on our 93 year old prime minister.
