Last Thursday (May 9) marks the first anniversary of the Pakatan Harapan government. In GE-14, the coalition won 113 out of 222 parliamentary seats, exceeding the simple majority of forming the government by 1 seat.

Pakatan Harapan allied party, Warisan, further strengthened the government with eight parliamentary seats. Additionally, PH-endorsed candidate for Batu parliamentary seat, P. Prabakaran joined PKR five days after the general election (on 14 May 2018).

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad addressed the one-year administration under Pakatan Harapan. He said that PH was formed by four parties (PKR, DAP, PPBM and Amanah) with different ideologies, but with the same objective – to take down former Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Besides, Tun Mahathir understands that the people are unhappy with the current government for not fulfilling the Harapan Manifesto. The delays happened because the past Barisan Nasional government had inflicted severe damage to the nation.

On the other hand, Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim warns PH of the increasing racial and religious issues in Malaysia. For example, there are ICERD ratification, Rome Statute ratification, Seafield Temple riot and others.

Meanwhile, the second top influencer of PH during its first anniversary, Mukhriz Mahathir, did not mention the celebration. The Kedah Chief Minister was busy talking about the economic development in Kedah.

Former International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz urged the people to give PH more time, adding that the people shall judge PH government at the end of its five-year term, not on its first-year anniversary in power.

However, not everyone celebrated the first anniversary. Former premier Najib Razak took the celebration as an opportunity to “jab” the government. He claims PH is performing poorly as a government, pointing out the reduction in foreign investments, decreasing palm oil prices, the falling Malaysian ringgit and many more.

UMNO acting president Mohamad Hassan also gave a similar comment about the PH government, saying that the people are unhappy with their performance. He predicted that GE-15 will be held within the next two years.
