Penang had the highest number of newly built houses in 2017, with over 11,000 units

The number of newly built houses in Malaysia had been increasing from 2015 to 2017. There was an increase of 6,625 units from 2015 to 2016. But the drastic increase was witnessed from 2016 to 2017, with a surge of 15,982 newly built houses in Malaysia in those two years.

In the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, the number of new houses multiplied annually from 2015 to 2017. The number of newly built houses in the Federal Territory rose from less than 2,000 units in 2015 to about 4,000 units in 2016 before reaching almost 10,000 units in 2017.

However, a contrary scenario was witnessed in Kuala Lumpur’s neighbouring state, Selangor. The number of newly built houses in the state decreased each year within the same period, i.e. 2015 to 2017. There were over 13,000 new housing units built in Selangor in 2015. But in 2017, the number of newly built houses in the state had reduced to about 11,000 units.

Regardless, the number of newly built houses in Selangor was still higher than in Kuala Lumpur in 2017. There was also a sudden spike in number of newly built houses in Penang, from less than 6,000 units in 2015 to over 11,00 units in 2017.

Consequently, Penang had a higher number of newly built houses in 2017 compared to Selangor.
