Selangor has the highest number of higher education institutes in Malaysia, with 149 IPTSs

 

In Malaysia, there are four types of higher education institutions, namely community college, polytechnic, public higher education institute (IPTA) and private higher education institute (IPTS).

 

According to data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), Selangor has the highest number of institutions with 173. The state has the most IPTA and IPTS in the country with 11 and 149 institutions respectively.

 

Following close is Selangor’s neighbour in the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur. The federal territory has 121 higher education institutes in total, 8 IPTAs and 112 IPTSs. However, there is no community college situated in Kuala Lumpur.

 

Whereas, Putrajaya, another federal territory in the Klang Valley, only had two higher education institutes, both are IPTS.

 

On the other hand, Johor has the highest number of polytechnics and community colleges in Malaysia, with 4 and 12 institutions accordingly. Nevertheless, the number is not far ahead of Selangor, as the state has 3 polytechnics and 10 community colleges.

 

Overall, the most common type of higher education institution available in Malaysia is IPTS (70.56%). It is followed by community college (12.65%) and government university (12.10%). Meanwhile, polytechnic made up the least percentage (4.54%) in the distribution of institutions by type in Malaysia.
