Behind Langkawi’s Tourism Industry

Companies and jobs in Langkawi are tailored to the tourism industry, but the industry’s importance is yet to be reflected in the workers’ salaries despite the island’s international hospitality status.

As the tourism industry becomes more prominent in Langkawi, companies are largely found near tourist attractions, likely tailored to tourists’ needs.

The mukim with the highest number of companies is Kuah, where almost all of the companies are close to tourist attractions.

Most jobs in Langkawi are unsurprisingly in the hotel/restaurant industry, which is followed by sales/marketing and admin/human resources

Despite their essential role, however, hotel/restaurant workers are found to have a relatively low median salary of below RM2,000.

The company in Langkawi providing the largest number of these jobs is revealed to be Marriott International, the international hospitality brand leader.
