Music Museum in KL witnessed 255% increase in its number of visitors in 2016, but was permanently closed in the following year

According to data from Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), Muzium Negara witnessed an increase of 476,489 visitors from 2015 to 2017.

The drastic hike in number of visitors at the museum occurred in 2016. It multiplied by almost twice compared to the year before.

Muzium Negara is also the most visited museum in Malaysia. Its tremendous visitor growth in 2016 contributed to increase of overall museumgoers in the country, from 2.7 million visitors in 2015 to over 3 million visitors in 2017.

Besides Muzium Negara, Muzium Tekstil Negara in Kuala Lumpur also had a healthy visitor growth between 2015 to 2017, it increases from 58,895 visitors to 106,664 visitors accordingly.

Whereas, Muzium Perak (Perak), Galeria Perdana (Kedah) and Muzium Etnologi Dunia Melayu (Kuala Lumpur) were among the museums in Malaysia that suffered from significant visitor decline within the same three-year period.

On the other hand, Muzium Muzik in Kuala Lumpur recorded the lowest number of visitors in 2015, with only 17,634 people. However, the museum’s visitor arrival had a sudden increase by 255% in 2016. Its number of visitors was recorded at 62,633 people in that year.

Unfortunately, in January 2017, Muzium Muzik was shut down. Muzium Alam Semulajadi in Putrajaya also suffered from the same fate in 2017.

Overall, total visitors at Malaysia’s museums increased by 14% from 2015 to 2017. However, the healthy growth rate was mostly contributed by the museumgoers at Muzium Negara. On the downside, the number of visitors were declining for most of the museums in Malaysia.
