Ever-growing visitors travelling to Langkawi

Langkawi Island is well-known as a tourism hotspot for the locals and also the foreigners, popularily known for being a tax-free island. It has been declared as a duty-free zone in 1987 by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his first run as Malaysia Prime Minister. Then, the island continues to bloom into the tourism hotspot it is today.

In 2007, Langkawi was given a Geopark World status by UNESCO. Besides, it is also the home of multiple stage bicycle race, Tour de Langkawi, and the bi-annual aerospace and maritime exhibition, Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA).

From Langkawi visitor data, the busiest time for the island is during the year-end period. Primarily, it is because of the school holiday.

A huge spike of visitors traveling to Langkawi can be seen in 2013, attracting roughly 400,000 more visitors compared to 2012. However, the increase of visitors to Langkawi has been slowing down since 2014. Despite that, the trend is still positive.

In November 2018, the infamous superyacht “Equanimity” has been docked in Langkawi. It was reported that Equanimity is owned by businessman-turned-fugitive Jho Low. It will temporary placed there to keep up its value.

For the visitors travelling to Langkawi, they might have the opportunity to have a peek at the luxurious superyacht which its value was reportedly worth RM1.42 billion.
