Hamid Bador’s first two weeks as IGP
It has been roughly two weeks since Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador was appointed as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
During his first press conference as IGP, he said he will push forward the setting up of Independent Police Complaint and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
A week later, on May 10, the Royal Malaysian Police and the National Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre (GIACC) have came to an agreement on establishing the commission.
Previously, former IGP Fuzi Harun said that there are about 130,000 serving police personnel who disagree with the setting up of IPCMC.
However, that is not the biggest issue surrounding Hamid Bador within his first two weeks as IGP. According to his media exposure, he had a high exposure from May 13 to May 15.
During that period, his top issues can be divided into three categories; Warisan urges the Special Branch personnel to identify themselves when attending party or government event, the appointment of Datuk Mazlan Mansor as Deputy IGP and counterterrorism in Malaysia.
Four suspects were arrested by the authorities for planning to launch terror attacks on four undisclosed VIPs and non-Muslims houses of worship in the Klang Valley. The suspects include one Malaysian, one Indonesian and two Rohingya refugees. The authorities labelled the terrorist group as “Wolf Pack”.
Six improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and a CZ9mm pistol along with 15 bullets were seized. However, Hamid Bador informed the public that there are still suspects from the “Wolf Pack” who have yet to be arrested.
It was reported that their planned terror attacks were to avenge the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib.
In effort to curb religious radicalism in the nation, the IGP announced that the police will work with religious authorities to stop the spread of Shia Islam (Malaysians practice Sunni Islam). He pointed out that the authorities have identified a religious group which has been distributing leaflets promoting Hussain, a prophet and central figure in Shia Islam.
Overall, it has been a productive first two weeks for Hamid Bador as IGP.
