Statistics of primary school students in Malaysia

 

According to statistics from Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the enrolment at primary schools in Malaysia in 2017 was at 2.67 million students. Then, the population of Malaysia was at 31.62 million people.

 

Categorized by gender, the percentage of male students was higher compared to their female counterparts, 51.3% to 48.7% respectively.

 

The number of primary school students in the rural areas (1,383,489 pupils) was higher than the students enrolled in the urban areas(1,295,140 pupils).

 

Regardless, the percentage of primary school students was well-spread across the various standards, from Year 1 to Year 6. The standard with the highest percentage was Year 2 (16.87%), while the least was Year 5 with 16.11%.

 

The majority of Malaysian primary school students were enrolled in national schools, with a total of 4.1 million students. On the other hand, Chinese vernacular school had the second highest number of students with over 1 million pupils, but its Tamil counterpart only had 163,402 students.
