Internal conflict surfaces in PAS
PAS once again came under the media attention after the RM90 million bribe scandal. Recently, Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad revealed that PAS will not be supporting UMNO in the upcoming Semenyih by-election, which will be held on 16 February 2019.
Considering their recent success of collaboration in the recent Cameron Highlands by-election, this came as a surprise because PAS had earlier said that they will support UMNO to strengthen the opposition.
Meanwhile, PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan came forth with a statement contradicting with his leader, Abdul Hadi Awang’s stance.
When it comes to Semenyih, Tun Mahathir takes the lead in talking about Semenyih by-election. On the other hand, PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang remains coy talking about other matters rather than clarifying on PAS current position.
Whereas, Takiyuddin came out with a statement opposing Mahathir’s claim, saying that PAS will not support Bersatu.
The media coverages and statistic are suggesting that PAS leaders have disagreement over the direction of their party.
Takiyuddin Hassan representing PAS is eager to pledge their support to UMNO, while Hadi Awang did not speak on the party stance directly. With the current situation, PAS direction will become oxymoron until Abdul Hadi Awang address the PAS political stance himself.
