In the previous election, Stephen received a majority of 10,098 votes against Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Lim Ming Hoo; LDP was still a part of Barisan Nasional at that time.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng came forth to offer his condolences on behalf of DAP. Guan Eng described the late Sandakan MP as a “great leader of the party and the state” and that his passing will be heavily felt by DAP as well as Sabah and the whole of Malaysia.

The funeral for the Sandakan MP will take place today. Politically, the Sandakan parliamentary seat is vacant, thus there will be another a by-election.

As of today, LDP remains silent on the by-election. On the other hand, Sabah UMNO chief Bung Mokhtar said that UMNO will not be vying for the seat but will support whoever the opposition is.
