Post GE-14: Najib popularity on Twitter significantly reduced

Previous observation by Malaysia Indicator showed former Minster of Youth and Sports as the most vocal UMNO leader on Twitter for the year 2018.

On the other hand, former Prime Minister Najib Razak have higher amount of feedbacks on Twitter in the form of retweets and mentions. Nevertheless, the responses he received are not necessarily positive.

The dependency above shows UMNO leaders’ retweet/mentions trend in Twitter. After the elections, Najib’s popularity on Twitter fell, dropping dramatically from 145,599 in May to 47,358 in June.

Zooming into the share of voice, Najib has 600,000 more retweets/mentions when compared with Khairy for the past 12 months. However, the past 6 months after Pakatan Harapan took over, the gap between Khairy and Najib has been reduced. For the past 7 days, Khairy covers 44.55% while Najib is only 7% away with 51.35%.

Overall, the feedbacks that Najib received on Twitter significantly reduced after GE-14. For the current UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, he suffered the same fate as Najib, the amount of feedbacks he garnered from Twitter users are on the declining trend.

However, that is not the case for Khairy, the amount of responses that he received in Twitter are higher after the general election. Therefore, Khairy currently could gather a comparable size of buzz like Najib on Twitter.

Besides, the data popped another question. Where are the Twitter users that responded to Najib prior to GE-14?
